Connie Frisbee Houde, photojournalist:
"In February of 2003, I visited an orphanage in Kabul and was struck by
the age I saw reflected back at me from the eyes of the children.
Their eyes hold much of the death and destruction they have witnessed
in their short lives and they show wisdom gained from these experiences
and a curiosity as well. Family is a major component of life in Afghanistan and these children have lost their
connections with loved ones thus losing this important element of
stability. The conditions are harsh and resources are stretched
in the outside world as well as the orphanage, forcing some families to
send their children to an orphanage with the hope of increasing their
chances for survival and growth."
